Project Overview
This project undertook a comprehensive fire alarm system replacement for the main campus building of St. Mary's Home for Children, a nonprofit residential treatment center in North Providence, RI. The facility, encompassing a two-story structure with a basement, included classrooms, sleeping units, support spaces, and a gymnasium. The project involved the complete replacement of all fire alarm detection and notification devices, integration with existing access control systems, and ensured compliance with current life safety codes.
Role & Responsibilities
Fire Alarm System Design – Engineered a new fire alarm system featuring addressable detection devices, audible and visual notification appliances, and duct smoke detectors for HVAC units.
Integration with Access Control – Coordinated the interface between the new fire alarm system and existing access control units to ensure seamless operation during alarm conditions.
Phased Implementation – Developed a phased installation plan to accommodate the facility's continuous operation, minimizing disruptions to residents and staff.
As-Built Documentation – Conducted extensive site visits to create accurate as-built drawings, compensating for the lack of existing documentation and capturing the facility's current conditions.
Stakeholder Collaboration – Engaged in regular meetings with the facilities team and ownership to align the design with operational needs and budget constraints.
Key Challenges & Solutions
🔹 Lack of Existing Documentation – The absence of up-to-date building plans necessitated the creation of new background drawings from scratch.
✔ Solution: Performed detailed field surveys and measurements to develop accurate floor plans, ensuring the fire alarm design was based on current conditions.
🔹 Maintaining Facility Operations – The need to keep the facility operational during the renovation posed scheduling and logistical challenges.
✔ Solution: Implemented a phased construction approach, coordinating closely with facility staff to schedule work during off-peak hours and ensure safety.
🔹 Budget Constraints – As a nonprofit organization, St. Mary's required cost-effective solutions without compromising safety and compliance.
✔ Solution: Provided detailed cost estimates and supported funding applications, tailoring the design to balance functionality with budgetary limitations.
Outcome & Impact
✅ Delivered a modern, code-compliant fire alarm system enhancing the safety of residents and staff.
✅ Ensured uninterrupted facility operations throughout the renovation process.
✅ Established accurate as-built documentation to support future facility upgrades and maintenance.
