Project Overview

Designed and coordinated electrical systems for a 100,000-square-foot addition and 50,000 square feet of renovations at Phoenix High School. The project modernized the campus with new CTE labs, science classrooms, performing arts spaces, upgraded athletic facilities, and a 300 kW solar PV system. Electrical infrastructure upgrades included a new main service, LED lighting, and life-safety systems, ensuring improved efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.

Role & Responsibilities

🔹 Power Distribution & Utility Upgrades – Designed a new 480/277V switchboard, sub-panels, transformers, and emergency egress lighting. Developed a phased demolition plan to maintain critical systems during cutovers.
🔹
Specialized Lab & Facility Power – Designed dedicated circuits for welding/metal shops, automotive bays, culinary arts, science labs, and performing arts. Integrated stage lighting and AV systems in the renovated theater.
🔹
Solar PV Integration – Coordinated a 300 kW rooftop solar array with Ameresco, including utility tie-in, interconnection protection, and net metering compliance.
🔹
Construction Oversight – Reviewed submittals, responded to RFIs, attended OAC meetings, and conducted site inspections to ensure code compliance and quality execution.

Key Challenges & Solutions

🔹 Phased Construction & Demolition Coordination – The campus remained occupied throughout construction, requiring careful system cutovers.
Solution: Developed a detailed cutover plan to keep fire alarm, security, and PA/mass notification systems operational until new systems were commissioned.
🔹
Limited Space for Electrical Equipment – The design allotted minimal space for main electrical panels and rooms.
Solution: Implemented a distributed electrical infrastructure with multiple electrical closets and compact switchgear to maximize available space.
🔹
Voltage Drop Over Long Cable Runs – Some branch circuits approached distance limits, risking excessive voltage drop.
Solution: Upsized conductors for long runs to maintain proper voltage levels and improve long-term reliability.
🔹
Solar PV System Integration – Interfacing a large solar array with the new and existing buildings required early coordination.
Solution: Worked with the utility and AHJ to ensure a smooth interconnection, avoiding delays in commissioning.

Outcome & Impact

Modernized learning environments – Delivered new CTE labs, science classrooms, and arts spaces tailored for hands-on education.
Enhanced safety & reliability – Upgraded fire alarm, security, and emergency power systems for improved campus safety.
Energy-efficient infrastructure – Integrated a 300 kW solar array and LED lighting, reducing operational costs and supporting sustainability goals.
Seamless campus integration – Ensured new and existing buildings operated cohesively with enhanced power capacity and resilience.
