Project Overview

In response to growing enrollment and the need for modernized facilities, Orchard Hill Elementary School underwent a significant addition and renovation project. The initiative encompassed approximately 9,150 square feet of renovations and about 10,000 square feet of new construction. Key enhancements included a new cafeteria and kitchen, covered play area, updated main and rear entries, and improved circulation and administrative spaces. Site improvements featured the relocation of the playground, creation of a new bicycle storage area, and utility upgrades to support the new additions.

Role & Responsibilities

Electrical Engineering: Designed and implemented energy-efficient lighting systems, power distribution networks, and emergency backup solutions to ensure uninterrupted operations.

Data & Communications: Established robust IT infrastructure to support educational technology and administrative functions.

Fire Alarm: Designed upgraded notification and detection systems for both the renovated and addition portions of the project.

Building-to-building Interconnection: Designed extension of existing campus main infrastructure to new addition to maintain security, surveillance, data, power, and fire alarm system architecture.

Key Challenges & Solutions

🔹 Operational Continuity: Renovations needed to occur without disrupting ongoing school activities or compromise security in any way.
Solution: Phased construction schedules and strategic planning minimized interruptions, allowing the school to maintain its educational programs and site safety during the project.

🔹 Site Safety: New underground work needed to be planned such that minimal interruption to existing student outdoor activity and flow occurred.
Solution: Design systems such that no major pathway or activity zone was interrupted at any given time, and construction could be phased.

🔹 Existing Infrastructure Constraints – The project budget did not allow for major electrical infrastructure upgrades across the campus.
Solution: Conducted early-stage existing condition surveys and load analysis to confirm available capacity. The team developed strategies to reuse existing infrastructure wherever possible, including selective system extensions, cost-optimized upgrade options, and load-shedding scenarios to avoid triggering costly utility or service upgrades.

Outcome & Impact

✅ Expanded and modernized facilities now accommodate the school's growing student population.
✅ Enhanced safety features and updated systems provide a secure and efficient learning environment.
✅ Improved amenities, such as the new cafeteria and covered play area, contribute to student well-being and engagement.
