Project Overview
Designed and coordinated the electrical systems for a full historic renovation of the 1930-era Holly Theatre — a 1,008-seat Spanish Colonial Revival performing arts venue listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The project restored original features like the neon blade sign and hand-painted interiors while integrating modern performance systems, new life-safety infrastructure, and ADA-compliant power upgrades.
Role & Responsibilities
Power Distribution – Designed new distribution systems with upgraded service equipment, panelboards, and transformer coordination to support theatrical lighting, public spaces, and code-mandated loads.
Theatrical & House Lighting – Integrated programmable stage lighting controls, dimmable house lighting, and dedicated power for audiovisual and production equipment.
Life Safety & Emergency Systems – Engineered code-compliant emergency lighting, fire alarm integration, and circuits for smoke evacuation and critical systems.
Historic Restoration Coordination – Collaborated with architects and preservation consultants to discreetly route wiring through historic finishes, preserving the building’s architectural character.
Key Challenges & Solutions
🔹 Limited Pathways in Historic Structure – The existing building had minimal space for new conduit and panel placement.
✔ Solution: Used low-profile raceways and strategic routing behind ornamental features to maintain aesthetics while delivering full system functionality.
🔹 Upgrading Infrastructure in a Condemned Facility – The theater had been vacant for over 30 years and required total system replacement.
✔ Solution: Designed all-new electrical infrastructure from utility service to receptacle, coordinated early with the utility, and phased installation to match restoration progress.
🔹 Integrating Performance Systems in a Multi-Use Venue – The theater required flexible electrical support for live events, lectures, and film screenings.
✔ Solution: Designed multiple production zones with isolated circuits and tie-ins to accommodate evolving event needs and future expansion.
Outcome & Impact
✅ Cultural landmark preserved – Reopened after 40 years of closure as the largest indoor performing arts venue between Eugene and Redding.
✅ Blend of history and technology – Delivered modern performance and life safety systems without compromising architectural integrity.
✅ Electrically resilient & future-ready – Designed for long-term adaptability with modern infrastructure discreetly integrated within a 1930s shell.
✅ Community anchor restored – Enabled a high-impact reopening that now serves as a regional arts hub for Southern Oregon.
